Plasma Technology in the Treatment of Substrate Surfaces

Plasma surface modification is one of the most economical solutions for cleaning and activating component surfaces for further processing. Plasma technology is one of the most versatile technologies that can help get a good adhesive bond for plastics or metal, enhance the adhesive properties of a surface for printing ink, and to clean metals.

How plasma treatment works

For the most part, plasma is a partially ionized gas and a mixture of neutral atoms, atomic and molecular ions, electrons and molecules in an agitated state. The positive and negative charges balance each other and are therefore electrically neutral.Plasma treatment occurs when the charged particles in plasma that carry vast amounts of energy come together and interact with a particular surface.

By selecting the appropriate gas, pressure and power, the effects of treatment on any surface can be specified and accurately controlled. Plasma treatment is usually conducted in a vacuum chamber where the air within is pumped out prior to the introduction of the gas. The gas flows into the enclosure at a low pressure. Plasma treatment when performed at low temperatures is ideal for processing heat sensitive materials. The technique is known as cold plasma.

The benefits of plasma treatment

This treatment is used to clean surfaces, and for surface activation, deposition and etching. It is used at an industrial level to treat surfaces of various materials and prepare them for coating, printing and adhesion. It removes any foreign contaminants on the surface of the material so that is made suitable for further processing. Applying plasma treatment on the surface of materials such as plastics results in an effective pre-treatment prior to gluing, lacquering or printing. Ceramics and glass area are also treated with plasma.

In silicone dispensing, plasma technology also improves the adhesive performance of silicone. It is one of the most economical processes that can be used in a wide range of applications. High speed plasma treatment systems are designed to enhance barrier performance and allows for high quality cleaning with the reduction of low molecular weight contaminants from the surface of the substrate. It also eliminates any absorption of moisture. The plasma field is directed towards the film surface to allow for high performance cleaning.

Types of plasma treatment

There are several types of plasma cleaning and surface treatment. Blow ion systems are used on non-conductive and conductive surfaces for inks and coatings. In this type of treatment, air is forced through a single electrode to produce positively charged ions which are forced to the tip of the head and onto the surface to increase the surface energy of the material. In blow arc systems, the surface of materials are made more receptive to inks by passing air through high voltage electrodes to produce positively charged ions.
